Referrals on social media is one of the Scuti’s exciting features that let all your happy customers share a post/story on their choice of social media and spread the word about your brand. In this tutorial, we will show how you can achieve this goal with our Referrals on Social Media program.
Launch a hybrid or referral campaign
The first step is to launch a campaign. In this tutorial, we provided a step-by-step guide on how to launch a campaign in just 2 minutes. For Referrals on Social Media, the campaign type must be either “Hybrid” or “Referral”.
Where to show referral widgets?
Once you launch your campaign, Scuti shows referral widgets to your customers in various touchpoints, including both post-purchase and pre-purchase, depending on your campaign settings. As of now, customers may be exposed to referral widgets in four different ways:
- Review/referral request email (only in hybrid campaign): After a customer places an order, Scuti will send them an email to ask for writing a review about one of the products on their order. Once they submit their review, the customer is exposed to the referral widget and is asked to share a post/story. Note that both the content of the email and the sending time of the email can be customized by you in your campaign settings.
- Referral request email (only in referrals campaign): After a customer places an order, Scuti will send them an email and directly ask for referrals. Once they click on the email’s CTA, the customer is exposed to the referral widget and is asked to share a post/story. Note that both the content of the email and the sending time of the email can be customized by you in your campaign settings.
- Thank You page: After a customer places an order, Scuti shows the referral widget on the Thank You page. In the Settings step of your campaign, you have the option to either show or not show the referral widget on the “Thank You” page.
- Top sticky bar: Unlike the above three points, you can also show the referrals widget to your customers even if they haven’t placed an order (i.e., pre-purchase). In this case, Scuti will show the referral widget in the form of a sticky bar on the top of your store pages. Again in the settings step of your campaign, you have the option to either show or not show the referral widget on the “Sticky bar” page.
Customer’s journey to share and win
Now, assume the customer has seen the referral widget via either of the above touchpoints and would like to share a post/story to win the reward. As of now, the reward is in the form of a discount code where the value of this discount code is determined by you in your campaign creation.
In a nutshell, all the customer needs to do is: First, create a post/story and share it on their choice of social media. The only requirement here is to display the discount code, shown on the text box of the referral widget, on their post/story. Note that this discount code is not activated yet. Second, once their story/post gets at least 10 likes or views, they will upload their screenshot in the link that Scuti will send to them. Finally, if the screenshot is approved by Scuti, the discount code is activated. And the customer and their friends can redeem it on their next purchase.
If you got the idea, then you may skip the next section. Otherwise, I will explain the customer’s journey in a bit more detail.
Step1: Select their choice of social media network
The customer should first select what social media network they prefer to share a story/post. As of now, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter are the available options.
Step 2: Copy the discount code and the store’s social media page
Because we’re running a referral program, we want both sides of the referral program (i.e., your current customer and your potential new customer) to get rewarded. To do so, Scuti generates a discount code and shows it on the text box of the referral widget. Then, the customer is asked to display this discount code on their post/story so that their friends are also incentivized to make a purchase and become a new customer. Note that at this time, this discount code is inactive and won’t work until the customer’s post/story gets approved by Scuti’s automated process.
In addition, if you have a social media page, we also ask the customers to mention it on their post/story. If the customer chooses to share on Instagram, we only show your Instagram page if it is available in your campaign settings. The same logic is applied to Facebook and Twitter. Thus, if a customer wants to share on Twitter and you only have an Instagram page, we won’t show a social media page on the text box.
To make things easier, the customer can simply copy the text box by clicking on the Copy button and pasting it in on their social media post/story.
Step 3: Create a simple story/post
The next step is that the customer should open their selected social media by clicking on “Go to Instagram/Facebook/Twitter”, creating a simple story/post, pasting the discount code (and tagging your social media page, if available), and finally share the post/story.
Note that if the customer’s email is unknown from their order or if they start the referral process from the sticky bar, we ask them to give us their email. Scuti needs the customer’s email only for sending them a link for uploading the screenshots of their post/story. We never use the customer’s email for marketing purposes.
Step 4: Upload screenshots
Unfortunately, because social media platforms restrict third parties to get access to the users’ profiles, it is almost impossible to automatically track customers’ post/story even if their profile is public. That is why Scuti asks customers to upload the screenshots of their story/post once it gets at least 10 likes or views.
Once uploaded, Scuti’s algorithm automatically verifies the customer’s post to make sure it is a valid post/story and blocks any potential fraud. After the screenshot is approved, the discount code gets activated. Now, both the existing customer and their friends can redeem the code on their next purchase.
When the discount code gets activated, Scuti notifies the customer about their discount code and also encourages them to make a new purchase by redeeming their discount code.
